我昨天看完一本书,叫做《美国之梦》。后来我研究了一下,发现这本希望出版社出版的210页的书,2006年用同一个ISBN号出版的时候,叫做《雷电捕捉者》,是一本绿色封皮的书,现在变成米色封皮了。但是内容都是一样的,其实就是《富兰克林自传》,这本书在豆瓣上有相当多个译本,可见流行的程度。
这本书是富兰克林晚年的时候写的一本随笔性质的自传,脉络不是很清晰——当时他手头参考资料也不够,只能想到哪里写到哪里。富兰克林是一位传奇性的人物,才华横溢,品格优良,早年创业赚钱,中年时进入公共事务和科学界,也曾在战争中贡献过力量,最后又成为美国的建国者。无论用什么年代的标准来衡量,这样的人都是梦幻般的人物,精英中的绝对精英。不经意间就学会了四门语言,走到哪里都能够和上层人物接上关系,玩一玩电学试验仪器就成了科学巨擘,不小心就创立了几个延续几百年的机构——这些事情,在他的笔下,就如我写的流水账一样随意的写出来。我就不太明白,这种事情有什么参考价值?除了打击打击普通人之外,或许可以勉强窥视一下精英的人物在处理事情时候的方式,如此而已。
那个时候的美国城市化的水平已经相当的高了,议会等的权利结构也已经相当的成熟,各方面利益团体的冲突也逐渐的显现。富兰克林一开始做报业,就经历了数次的冲突,一直到自己进入议会,才得以缓过来,大大赚上一段时间。通过这些冲突,他也逐渐的去学习怎么样和他人协调,怎么样拟定规则、平衡权利。那个时候的城市作为一个城市,还有相当多的基础设施没有完善,他就组织建大学、建医院、建火灾联防队,组织安排清扫街道,等等。他通过报业的经验,学会了如何掌握舆论,同时他也创建了精英的阅读组织“共读会”,通过精英讨论来影响上层人士的思想,为社会改革铺平道路。此外,在更多的情况下,人们似乎更关注富兰克林的个人修养,比如他勤勉的品质,比如他给自己列的十三条道德准则,我觉得这其中有一半是天生,有一半是迫于人生的教训得出的结论。
富兰克林是一个接近完美的人,但他更多的是在追求自己的安身立命,功成名就,是一种“实用的功利主义哲学”。“美国之梦”这个词,当时还没有出现在他们的字典上呢。
