3.2.2 Feminine Consciousness shown of Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice
(1) From Knowing others to Knowing Herself:
Firstly, Elizabeth’s Feminine Consciousness is shown by her relationship with men. To some extent, men are otherness of women. Only when we exactly know others can we know ourselves correctly. This issue can be stated by the two relationships between Elizabeth and Darcy, and between Elizabeth and Wickham.
As the host and the hostess of the story, Elizabeth’s first meet with Darcy at the dancing party is not that wonderful. At the dancing party, Darcy refuses to be introduced to any other lady to dance with, except for the two ladies that come together with him. His arrogant attitude offends all people at the party. People conclude that he is the most arrogant and bothersome man in the world, hoping that he would never come to any party any more. Especially when Mr. Bingley advises him to invite Elizabeth to dance, he says although Elizabeth is pretty, not pretty enough to attract him, thus he does not have such a good mood to invite her. These words occasionally meet the ears of Elizabeth, who is standing nearby. Therefore, she does not have a good opinion of him naturally. This is the first time that Darcy’s “Pride” meets with Elizabeth’s “Prejudice”. Seriously speaking, this time, Darcy’s “Pride” is just material of Elizabeth’s making judgment, while consequence of judgment turns out to be “Prejudice”, which has been confirmed lately. Although this judgment is evaluated to be a “Prejudice”, this kind of “Prejudice” is a judgment made by a woman that is always inferior, towards a man who is with noble social status and was born to be rich. Therefore, it is particularly significant. This is a representation of Elizabeth’s bravely criticizing a man that superior to herself. Besides, it is also her declaring her own position by putting herself in a position that is equal with men. In a word, she has independent ability of observation, evaluation and criticism of her own.
However, anyway, this mental preconception caused by this first bad impression has brought unfavorable effect on the future relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth, and this also leads to misunderstandings that make them satirize and quarrel with each other in their future intercourse. Maybe you will ask:” Is it a great irony on the independent evaluation ability that Elizabeth herself is proud of?” Actually, it seems not. Because the relationship between Elizabeth and Wickham is involved. Wickham leaves a very good impression on Elizabeth, and therefore, he is trusted completely by her. However, as a matter of fact, Wickham is a consummate villain who is false, faithless and unmoral. He stigmatizes Darcy in front of Elizabeth on purpose. Moreover, by seeing the vulgarity and ignorance of Mrs. Bennett and the levity and superficiality of her three little daughters, Darcy persuade Bingley to broke up with Jane, the elder sister of Elizabeth. As a result, prejudice of Elizabeth to Darcy has reaches to the climax at that time. Therefore, it is obviously that evaluations of Elizabeth on these two men are “Prejudice” that both are not correspondent to the fact. In a word, these evaluations is completely base on the seeing and hearing of Elizabeth herself, and then made by the independent judging ability of her own. This kind of independent judging ability seems to be particularly valuable in t优-文^论,文.网
http://www.youerw.com he social background in which women attached themselves heavily to others, especially to men. The difference between Elizabeth and other women is that she is able to evaluate independently by receiving sorts of information initiatively, while a majority of women at that time don’t used to make judgments independently. This represents her feminine consciousness the most deeply. Moreover, just exactly because of this, she is able to make correct evaluations as long as correct information is received. This can be represented by the transition of relationships between her and the two men.
The turning point of realization of Elizabeth towards the two men appears after the contradiction between her and Darcy being intensified. After Elizabeth blames Darcy for his interference with relationship between Bingley and Jane, and his relentlessness to Wickham, Darcy writes her letter to justify himself. From this letter, Elizabeth gets to know that Wickham is a playboy with misbehavior. She thinks deeply while reading, and she makes an integrated evaluation by combining all things and behaviors of the two men together. After that, she sinks into a feeling of deep guilty for her misunderstanding and prejudice to Darcy. At this moment, the author Jane Austen gives a long interior monologue of Elizabeth’s self-examination:” I am so despicable! I used to be proud of my understanding towards people, I used to think I am powerful! In order to fulfill my vanity, I am suspicious of others off the point while I am trying to make myself invulnerable. This is exactly what I shameful for. At the very beginning when I get to know both of them, I am happy when one of them likes me, and I am angry when another snubs me. Therefore, my prejudice and innocence have been shaped. When I come across with things that related to them, I cannot make clear judgments any more. And I finally get self-knowledge at this very moment.”
The last sentence “I finally get self-knowledge at this very moment” shows that Elizabeth finally finishes a process from knowing others to knowing herself. Therefore, a potential issue is here: Why Elizabeth, such a clever and intelligent person, shall be misled by Wickham and misunderstands Darcy? Where is her sharp ability of evaluation? I personally think that besides the unique artistic techniques on the author’s handling figures of the characteristics, the more important significance lies in the fact that through the process of self-examination of Elizabeth, the author Austen intends to state that the establishment of the independent feminine consciousness of women is not only a process of knowing and criticizing the men world, but only a process of self-examination and self-criticism. To some extent, although the two processes have two different directions, they happen at the same time. Because knowing others is knowing ourselves actually. Therefore, if to criticize men is for the objective of resisting men and getting rid of women’s status of being subjects, then this kind of resist is not the object itself. Its real effect lies in women can know themselves and build up their independent consciousness in their process of criticizing men. 上一页 [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] 下一页
