傲慢与偏见读后感英文版
(2) From Knowing Herself to Evaluating the Society:
In the social background of that time, women are in the social status of being subjects that are attached to men as the objects. This kind of being forced to attach will certainly leads to the loss of independent consciousness of most women. Therefore, their thoughts and behaviors seem to be vulgar and ridiculous. Among them, Elizabeth as a lady with independent consciousne优-文^论,文.网http://www.youerw.com ss, will certainly react to those ridiculous matters. If Elizabeth’s cognition towards Darcy and Wickham is of knowing others, then her cognition and criticism to the women around her can be accounted to a great understanding to a big community. In the story, the more representation of this is that Austen intends to criticize other women through Elizabeth’s independent consciousness. This will be stated by analyzing relationships between Elizabeth and other several women as following:
Firstly, let’s compare her with the lady in the same class. Elizabeth’s sister Jane is a really beautiful lady but without enough judging ability. Therefore, although she falls in love with Bingley at the very first sight, their relationship is not a plain sailing because of interference of others. This leads to a bright contrast to relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy. Elizabeth makes up her mind based on her independent evaluation not rely on others to control her own life and love. This contrast is not only an affirmation on Elizabeth’s independence, but also a criticism on Jane’s attaching herself to others. It seems that through this, Austen is telling the readers that only by independently controlling their own destiny and being responsible for their own can women be accounted to the real subjects.
Secondly, let’s compare her with the lady that has higher social status than her. Take Miss Bingley as an example, although she comes from a family of a magnate, she is very superficial and selfish. In order to prevent Bingley and Darcy from having relationships with Jane and Elizabeth, she sneers at the vulgar behaviors of Elizabeth’s mother and her sisters by all means. Except for class discrimination, the most important reason lies in her vanity and envy. She cannot bear Jane’s beauty and Elizabeth’s charm. And this leads to a bright contrast to Elizabeth’s deeply self-checking and self-examination on her own vanity.
These analyses above show that, to some meaning, Elizabeth is the spokeswoman of the author Jane Austen. As a matter of fact, the author admits herself that “Elizabeth is the avatar of herself and her dream selfhood”. To know herself by knowing men is a process from the outside to the inside, while by criticizing the women themselves is not only a self-examination, to the contrary, it is a process from the inside to the outside. Why? In the contrast to Elizabeth, Jane’s innocence and Mrs. Bennett’s vulgarity is obvious, but while laughing at them, people should realize that there are social reasons on the forming of these kinds of characteristics. When we are looking for its source, we should see the behind male chauvinism society that are holding great responsibility. Therefore, by comparing Elizabeth with other women, the author Austen expresses their ridiculousness on purpose, it seems that they are sneered at, but as a matter of fact, the author sticks the spear of criticism directly to the society of male chauvinism. Also based on the criticism of the society of male chauvinism, the feminine consciousness of Elizabeth as the spokeswomen of Jane Austen can be showed out. Because at this time, Elizabeth is no longer an object who is be suppressed, but another subject that dares to examine herself and criticize the ugly society of male chauvinism.

(3) Brief Summary:
In a word, Elizabeth’s feminine consciousness is established by two processes as below: One is from knowing others to knowing herself; a优-文^论,文.网

Simply speaking, it is subjectivism showed by women in the process of self-examination. Based on it, the author Jane Austen improves the feminine consciousness of Elizabeth to a upper standard, it is self realization of women. This self realization is represented to be the perfect combination between Elizabeth and Darcy in the story. But this perfect combination is more an achievement of Austen’s beautiful dream rather than a representation of the real life. Because at that time, social conditions are not sufficient for women to realize themselves indeed and to possess complete self consciousness. We can image that Elizabeth still has to live depend on her husband’s property after marriage, because not much marriage portion does she own. Therefore, as a result of her failing to be independent on economy, she may someday step after her mother to seek for a rich husband for her daughter. Anyway, this glorious image that built by Austen will be loved by people forever. The image of Elizabeth not only has special literary meaning, but it is also a practical instruction that can encourage more women to be strong and independent in modern society.
