2.1Family
Faulkner's great grandfather, Colonel William Falkner was born in 1825, and moved to the state of Mississippi at the age of fourteen. He inherited his father's railroad fortune and became first an Assistant U.S. Attorney, and later the president of the First National Bank of Oxford, Mississippi. He was also a politician, a soldier, a writer and a pioneer who was involved in several murder trials, including two he was accused of. During the Civil War he recruited a Confederate regiment and was elected as a colonel, but his arrogance caused his troops to demote him, so he was left to recruit another regiment. After the war he became involved in the railroad business and made a great deal of money. He bought a plantation and began to write books, one of which became a bestseller. He ran for Mississippi state legislature in 1889, but his opponent shot and killed him before the election. The stories of Faulkner’s great father never became old to him. It was always mysterious and legendary. He was a profound and competent man, who made tales of marvels in the southern America in the late 19th century. He was alcoholic but somehow had the influence on his great son, who became a big fan of alcoholic too. Faulkner paid much attention to his great father, and thus added a “u” in his name. Undoubtedly, his great father became the one who gave great impact on Faulkner’s life and writing career. Faulkner took pride of himself as the son of great-grand father. One of the figures “Colonel John” in Faulkner’ works remained a portrait of his great-grand father.原文请+QQ324,9114 优.文^论,文'网
