if work  is  switched  to  feed  of  a  highly  contrasting  color.  The  Helimat  is  a  batch  mixer,  with  short  operational
cycles  (50  to  150  sec).  An  automatic  coupling  and  brake  are  installed  between  the  electric  motor  and  agitator
shaft  to  bring  the  mixer  to  a  rapid  stop.

Clearly,  the  Helimat mixers  use  up  quite  a  lot  of metal  and  power.
The  high-speed  Drais,Disperserdisk mixer,  also  exhibited  by Drais,  features  stepless  rpm  control  from  850  to
1150  rpm  (Fig.  2),  and  is  designed  for  mixing,  dispersion,  and  dissolution.  Dispersion  is  achieved  by  the  use  of  spec-
ial  teeth  cut  around  the  annular  edge  of  the  rapidly  rotating  disk.  Mixing  is  achieved  by  circulating  the  process
liquor  through  axial  and  radial  pumping  effects.  The  rotor  part  of  the  agitator  assembly  can  be  rotated  in  the  hor-
izontal  plane  and  can  be  moved  up  and  down,  for  convenience  in  servicing  and  operation.  The  agitators  are  de-
signed  for  service  at  atmospheric  pressure  and  in  vacuum.  The  installed  power  rating  ranges  from  37  to  45  kW.
Werner-Pfleiderer  exhibited  the  continuous  PK 400  mixer  (Fig.  3)  designed  for  plasticizing  soft  polyvinyl
chloride  compositions.  This  machine  consists  of a  conical  rotor  rotating  in  a  fixed  shell,  a  pair  of  screw  feeders,  an
expeller  screw,  a  granulating  perforated  disk  with  cutting  wheel,  and  a  power  drive.  The  conical  rotor  is  fluted  to
intensify the  internal mixing  effect,  and  improve  the  passage  of  the  material  in  the  direction  of  the  expeller  screw.
The  clearance  between  rotor  and  shell  is  kept  within  0.3  to  4  mm.  Given  the  insignificant  thickness  of  the  process
mass  layer,  the  polymer  subjected  to  heavy  shear  stresses  becomes rapidly  and  uniformly heated,  thereby  under-
