Sir Gawain And The Green Knight is an Medieval English Romance written in the late 14th century。 It is one of far-reaching and best known Arthurian stories。 The image of Gawain is vivid and lively in Sir Gawain And The Green Knight。 The author of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is anonymous, scholars call this author as Gawain-poet or Pearl-poet because other more works: Patience, Pearl and Cleanness, which are also great poems in English literature。 There are at least three modern translations of the poem: Marie Borroff's, J。R。R。 Tolkien's and John Gardner's。 there are more works that containing Gawain's story, in Thomas Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur, Sir Gawain and his brothers are quite important roles in the Round Table Knights。 Another chronicle work, Canterbury Tales, containing a similar story as part of Sir Gawain's wedding story, partly proved that the Gawain-poet should be living in the around the times as Chaucer and Malory lived。 There are many researches and critics on this work。 The book A Companion to the Gawain-poet collected articles on the authorship of the poem, historical background and materials of culture。 In the "The Gawain-Poet As a Vernacular Theologian", the author analyzed how the ideas work into the vernacular minds, "Indeed, they represent one of the most interesting of all the fourteenth-century attempts to direct religious instruction at the laity in general and the aristocracy in particular。" In the book "Art of the Gawain-Poet", treatment of the hero and his adventure was discussed, the author also concentrated the secular point, "God is a tricky subject and the poet has to contend with greater resistance in both material and audience when he deal with scriptural and doctrinal matter。" In "The Oxford Guide to Arthurian Literature and Legend", Gawain's materials are sorted by three categories: Gawain romances other than English, English romances and reworkings of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight。 The Christianity in the chivalry is an important part, however, in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the story has something more than that, it carries the secular thoughts and ideas, although they are closely related to the Christianity。 "Gawain plays a significant role in Grail romances, where he is one of the questing knights(though rarely does he actually achieve the Grail)"。 As the prelude of Canterbury Tales for the Renaissance's humanity, Gawain's story also carries the humanity ideas。 The tests of beheading and the indulgent hunting game are quite a symbol for the humanity。 There are more books related, the British novelist Iris Murdoch (1919-1999)wrote a novel The Green Knight(1993), the novel set the story in the modern time and all the characters are reshaped according to the images in the Sir Gawain and The Green Knight。文献综述 《高文骑士与绿骑士》中的骑士精神与道德想象:http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_153580.html
