Samuel Langhorne Clemens, or Mark Twain, was an American writer, entrepreneur, publisher and lecturer。 He was born in Florida, Missouri, on November 30, 1835。 He was a son of a local lawyer and was brought up in Hannibal, Missouri, by the Mississippi River, which later provided the setting for Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn。 In 1847, when Twain was 11, his father, died of pneumonia and he left school to become a printer’s apprentice。 In 1851, he worked as a typesetter and contributed articles to the newspaper of his older brother, Orion Clemens。 In 1854, he left Hannibal and worked as a printer in New York City, Philadelphia, St。 Louis, and Cincinnati。 From 1857 to 1861 he worked as a licensed river-boat pilot on the Mississippi River。 When the Civil War broke out, Twain joined the Company of Missouri Volunteers and fought for the south in 1861。 After that, he became a tramp printer, a silver miner, a newspaper reporter and a lecturer until 1865。 In 1866, he moved back to New York and worked as a correspondent of the California newspaper。 In 1870, Twain became part owner and editor of the Buffalo Express and established his permanent home in Hartford, Connecticut in 1873。
Twain used different pen names such as Josh and Thomas Jefferson Snodgrass before deciding on “Mark Twain”。 This name came from his experience of the pilot on the Mississippi River, which means the water is 12 feet deep and it is safe to pass。 Since twain is an archaic term for “two” and two fathoms is a depth indicating safe water for passage of boat, was measured on the sounding line。
Since Twain has such rich life experiences, he can understand deeper of ordinary people and the whole society。 These experiences become the materials of his books and they also do help to his success。 Mark Twain writes a lot of excellent works such as The Notorious Jumping Frog of the Calaveras County (1867), The Gilded Age (1873), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), A Tramp Abroad (1880), The Prince and the Pauper (1882), Life on the Mississippi (1883), The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court (1889), The Tragedy of Pudd’nhead Wilson (1894), The American Claimant (1892), Tom Sawyer Abroad (1894), and Tom Sawyer Detective (1896)。论文网 《哈克贝利·费恩历险记》中哈克的成长之路(2):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_196429.html
