Abstract F. Scott. Fitzgerald (1896-1940), a famous writer in American literature, is regarded as one of the most important novelists of Jazz Age. He endeavors to create dozens of American flappers in his works. These flappers are so characteristic in Jazz Age that many critics pay close attention to them. This thesis is aimed to interpret his fictional flappers in The Great Gatsby and Tender Is the Night and reveal the process of awakening of women consciousness. In The Great Gatsby, flappers represented by Daisy, Jorden and Myrtle are awakening but vulnerable to the patriarchy, they are conservative and perplexed, simply because they are not mentally strong and economically independent. In Tender Is the Night, victimized but more conscious about subjectivity, Nicole and Rosemary, the representative flappers in the novel, relatively gain their independence through a harsh battle against patriarchy. The writer’s personal life experience and the social background at that time underlie the change of these characters’ female awareness to be more mature.31301

The Awakening of Female Awareness in The Great Gatsby and Tender Is the Night
Introduction
F.Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940), one of the important writers in the history of American literature in the 20th century, is known as the outstanding spokesman of Jazz Age. He, along with Hemingway and Faulkner, are regarded as “three kings” in American literature in the 20th century. His life is short and legendary. During his more than twenty years of writing career, he creates five novels and hundreds of short stories. Incorporating success and failure of his own life, his writings authentically and vividly reflect American social landscapes and values in 1920s and 1930s. He profoundly depicts that the young who are regarded as “lost generation” pursue American Dream madly after World War Ⅰ. And this “dream” is doomed to disillusionment. It can be seen in his two masterpieces: The Great Gatsby and Tender Is the Night.
