I. Introduction
Language transfer has been a central issue in applied linguistics, SLA, and language teaching for at least a century. Transfer studies originated even before the field of SLA research during the 1940s and 1950s. In the late 60s and the early 70s of last century the study of the second language acquisition began. From then on, it developed quickly and made great achievements. The discussion of transfer here may help to set to rest some dubious claims and to point the way toward more productive thinking about cross-linguistic influences. The role of the mother tongue transfer in the second language learning has long been a controversial issue. However, the mother tongue influences can be easily traced in all aspects of the second language learners’ inter-language.
As a tool to know the world, every language stands for an approach to perceive the world. Learning a language means learning another approach to perceive the world. The system of the lexical structure and semantic structure of a language reflects the approach in which the language community knows the world and the orbits in which history and culture develop. So, the second language acquisition is a very complex process. In short, the learner’s first language knowledge can serve as one of the inputs into the process of hypothesis generation. The learners process and use the second language on the basis of the first language. The effect of the mother tongue will manifest itself in the process of foreign language learning. Chinese students have no way to dismiss the effect of the native language and culture in English learning. In addition, the author will come up with some suggestions for reducing negative transfer of mother tongue in English acquisition.
