During the last two decades, English has undergone tremendous changes due to various reasons, from national to international circumstances, from the remarkable progress of the society to the advance of language itself。 These tremendous changes have led to the alteration in vocabulary, in speech habits and in the way people tend to write。 The continuing appearance of a large number of new words and expressions is the best manifestation of the development of the society, which has stirred up great attention and concerns from all walks of life, especially from those who take up professional studies related to language。 论文网

1。1 Significance of the Study

Words are a mirror of their times。 By looking at the areas in which the vocabulary of a language is expanding fastest in a given period of time, people can form a fairly accurate impression on the chief achievements of society at the time。 

Conducting research on new words and expressions is particularly helpful in foreseeing the development of a language。 Pronunciation and grammar are the comparatively stable language elements in the progress of language development while vocabulary plays an active role in language development。 In the course of word development, many methods of word formation result in numerous new words and expressions and those newcomers of word stock present the prevailing and practical methods of word-building。 As a mirror to display the laws of vocabulary development, this dynamic process facilitates language workers to learn more about the general trend of word development and induct prevailing ways of new word creation so as to direct the appropriate utilization of neologisms and enrich the expressions of a language。
