Communication in English Teaching of Primary School

Chapter One Introduction

1。1 The background

Human communication has two forms: verbal and nonverbal。 When we think of communication, we usually tend to consider it in terms of the words we say or write。 But in fact, nonverbal communication also plays a crucial role in human communication。 Nonverbal communication can reveal people’s underlying emotion, attitudes towards life and personal values。 With the help from the rapid development of our society, more and more researches has been done on human communication in recent years。 Researches on non-verbal communication becomes much more complicated and advanced than before。 Many scholars have begun to study it and accomplished a lot of delightful achievements。

Abereomile holds that we speak with our vocal organs, but we converse with our whole body。 Samovar and Porter propose that nonverbal communication involves all those nonverbal stimuli in a communication setting that are generated by both the source and his use of the environment and that have potential message value for the source or receiver。 Miller suggests that only 7% of a message is sent through words with the remaining 93% sent through kinesics (55%) and vocal intonation (32%)。 Chen Yuan holds that in fact, in the most of the cases social interactions are mixed with verbal actions and nonverbal actions。 In a word, nonverbal communication is a way of transmitting messages without words。 It is the process by which nonverbal behaviors are used。 It is everything except the actual words。

Until 1872, Darwin talked about the expression of the emotion in man and animals。 It laid the foundation of the nonverbal communication researches。 After World War II, the nonverbal communication study officially started。 In 1959, Edward T。Hall further discussed the application of nonverbal communication。 It marked the birth of nonverbal communication。 In 1970s, Fast’s Body Language was introduced into China in the form of Chinese version。 Since 1980s, an ever increasing number of works was translated or published into China。 In 1988, Geng Er’ling introduced the definition of nonverbal communication。 This is the beginning of nonverbal communication researches in China。 Bi Jiwan further discussed intercultural nonverbal communicationin 1999。 From these findings we can see that nonverbal communication occupies a very important position in human communication。 It helps people to further understand communication。

1。2 The significance and purpose文献综述

Nonverbal communication is significant in human daily interaction because it usually means the first impression。 We usually judge others based on the dressing, the color of the skin or the manner of them。 We like approaching others because of how attractive we find them。 In addition, nonverbal communication is important to the study of intercultural communication because lots of nonverbal behavior speaks a universal language。

As teachers, we should make the best use of nonverbal behavior。 Our emotion are reflected in our facial expression, postures, gestures especially our eye contact。 We may express them without saying a word, so we should use our facial expressions, eye contact, postures, and gestures quickly and correctly。 Our goal is that students can receive information as much as possible The main aim of English classroom teaching is to develop students’ reading, listening, writing, and speaking abilities, and our goal is that students can receive information as much as possible。
