2。1。3 Kindness
Although the dogs are animals, they also have human nature。 At the beginning of the story, Buck was a pet dog of Judge Miller and his family。 He plunged into the swimming tank or went hunting with the Judge's sons; he escorted the Judge's daughters on long twilight or early morning rambles; on wintry nights he lay at the Judge's feet before the roaring library fire; he carried the Judge's grandsons on his back, or rolled them in the grass, and guarded them through wild adventures。 He was civilized, kind, accompany his masters all the time。 Although Buck’s life tragedy changes because of the gold rush, those human nature still embodied in him。 In the chapter of Curly’s death, there is a detail: when Buck saw Spitz ran out his tongue and laughed, he hated Spitz with a bitter and deathless hatred。 Spitz was the leader of the dog, arrogant, unsympathetic, and often bullies other dogs。 Maybe the reason why Buck killed Spitz is that he was not willing to be controlled by others, maybe it’s his growing wildness drove him to fight and to kill his opponents, however, to some extent, this shows his kindness。 After Spitz’s death, other dogs would not be bullied by their leader anymore。 And maybe in Buck’s mind, Spitz’s death can give Curly some comfort。 This is Buck’s kindness, and maybe it can also be considered as a sense of justice。 In the story, other dogs also show us their kindness。 When Buck step on Billee’s snow hole unconsciously and was very fearful of the unseen and unknown, Billee whined placatingly, and licked Buck's face with his warm wet tongue。 When Buck was saved by John Thornton, the other two dogs belong to Thornton were very kind to Buck。 Skeet washed and cleansed Buck's wounds as a mother cat washes her kittens。 And each morning after Buck had finished his breakfast, Skeet would nurse Buck。 Nig is also very friendly to Buck。 He has a boundless good nature。 As Buck grew stronger, they enticed Buck into all sorts of ridiculous games。 When Buck felt in faint after saving John Thornton, Nig and Skeet took care of him on his side。 In the whole story, maybe only Skeet and Nig are Buck’s true friends。
