An Analysis of the Miserable Fate of Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights
Abstract
Heathcliff is the main character of Wuthering Heights。 He is widely acknowledged to be the devil in Wuthering Heights。 However, Heathcliff’s fate is miserable because of his identity as an orphan and the loss of love and marriage in his life。 While many people are enjoying their life, Heathcliff has to spend most of his life on revenge in order to protect himself from being hurt again。 This thesis mainly shows Heathcliff’s miserable fate in Wuthering Heights by analyzing Heathcliff’s miserable childhood, Catherine’s betrayal of love, his unbearable pain in the revenge and his miserable death。 It is the serious social discrimination in Victorian era and Emily Bronte’s experience that create such a tragic character。85256

1。 Introduction
1。1 Background Information
Emily Bronte (1818-1848), is a great English novelist and poet of the nineteenth century。 She was born in the village of Thornton, West Riding of Yorkshire, in Northern England。 The place where Emily lived is remote from the city, and the empty wasteland is monotonous and oppressive, which can make people feel lonely and have a sense of isolation。 This living environment has great impact on Emily’s personalities。 It makes her become extremely shy and reclusive, and it also arouses her desire for passion and freedom。 In Emily’s childhood, she went to the Clergy Daughters’ School at Cowan Bridge, where her elder sisters were already enrolled。 They had a hard time at the school because of the endless abuse and privations, and finally her sisters Maria and Elizabeth both died of tuberculosis。 Experiencing these bereavements, Emily could never forget the terrors and the hardship of her life at school and becomes quieter than before。 She did not seem to have made any friends outside her family。 In her leisure time, she would write poems and personal lyrics to express her will to break through the constrictions of ordinary life, to yearn for a freer world of spirit。 That is why she wrote the novel Wuthering Heights and created the conflict character--- Heathcliff。论文网
