Abstract Henry David Thoreau is one of the greatest American transcendentalists, writers, philosophers and naturalists in the 19th century。 Thoreau expresses the ideas on the relation between man and nature, which arouses many scholars’ academic interest。 This thesis aims to testify the significance of Walden on American literature historically。 Firstly, the advent of Walden in the 1850s evoked people’s instinct thinking on their life。 Secondly, from the 1940s to the 1970s, Thoreau’s ecological ideology in Walden became the inspiration to eco-criticism, consequently several systematic theories came into being, such as Earth Ethics and Deep ecology。 Lastly, from the 1970s to now, Walden provides natural writers with a new way of experiencing life and a new perspective of collecting resources and promotes the development of ecological criticism。 94745

1。 Introduction
In the history of American literature, perhaps no contact between author and geography will be as tight as that between Thoreau and Concord。 In July 12, 1817, Thoreau was born in the pleasant scenery of Concord。 In addition to the short live in the city of Stahn in New York, after graduating from college, Thoreau returned to Concord for the rest of his life, where he practiced his own view of nature。 It can be said that Concord is the only home of Thoreau, most of the knowledge and most of the works in Thoreau’s life are derived from here。 Thus Concord became the cradle of the natural view of Thoreau。 Under the influence of his mother, Thoreau began to have a strong interest in the outside world。 Thoreau is familiar with all the scenery, he visited the riverside, fields, and forests of Concord。
As a Harvard graduate who received a higher education, Thoreau’s own life to Walden was aroused people’s arguments and speculation。 He was seen as a Stoicist scholar, a good moralist, a parasite, a weary person, and a super mad。 He was also described as a philosophical anarchist, the losers of the town life, an aristocratic intellectual, and others simply attributed him to a naturalist writer。
