1.1 A Brief Introduction to the Movie Crash
In contemporary society, an important way to promote people’s communication and know more about other people is pop culture. What is pop culture? Simply speaking, pop culture can be recorded as the culture loved by the vast majority of people in the world and the film is one of the representatives of pop culture. And it also said to be the most popular culture.
We can learn about the culture of a specific country through their films. As we all know, Hollywood movie not only occupies a very important position in the film market, but also is hailed as one of the characteristics of American culture. what is the trait of American culture? The United States, as a nation of immigrants with the three hundred years’ development, has formed a country which defined the white people as the main body of the country and is composed with many other races, such as the white Latino, black, Asian and other ethnic groups. Because of this, people in the United States inevitably develop the contradictions and conflicts with each other. Although the United States’ government has gradually pushed forward the policy of ethnic persity, and it also created powerful results and consequence around the whole America, but the American society still exists many conflicts and contradictions.
The source of conflict and contradiction is the discrimination that exists in American society since the founding of the country. It not only exists between white people and other ethnic groups, but also is among ethnic minorities and among the different social strata. In other words, in
the United States, you can feel discrimination through politics, economy, social and educational institutions. Like the movie Crash, multiple discrimination exists in all aspects of life, people who live in Los Angeles can not escape from it.
Although the film Crash revealed the theme of discrimination and the collision of human nature, the director Haggis did not use a persuasive tone to tell the audience what we should do or should not do. He showed us the problems of American society through his unique shooting skills and story content, so that every audience has to think about the problem that has existed in America for so long time.
