Abstract
If we take a panoramic view of American literature history the 18th century, there were so many brilliant writers and critics coming up along with their wonderful masterpieces, which raised great reputation for themselves among the contemporary literary circles and had a profound influence upon later literal essayists and scholars. There was one outstanding writer born during the period of American Romantic Movement. His name was Edgar Allan Poe, who could boast himself as the most splendid writer and poet in the early 80s, absolutely. Once we review his life, it is obvious to find out he has created lots of masterpieces in different forms and related to various topics. Each one has its unique characters and special settings, but almost every story and poet has hit the literal field all over the America.
Poe is a very talented and knowledgeable writer. He makes use of every piece of his wits and imagination when he tries to design the plots and heroes. His tales usually happen in different places and have various background or settings. What’s more, his works always concern about large quantities of element, including language, culture, customs, places, surroundings and sometimes races, the extremely sensitive subject in America at that time. All the details are finished by Poe himself, and it is safe to announce that Poe is a real literature master for his heavy cultural foundation and cautious attitude towards literature. Besides this, he has created a new kind of literal materials, which is thought highly by readers and scholars all the time. That is his detective fiction novels which has elevated him into the literary spotlight as the inaugurator to start a new field. When it comes to his detective tales, The Gold Bug is an appropriate example for which we can appreciate Poe’s talent thoroughly.
This thesis aims to analyze Edgar Allan Poe’s The Gold Bug from the perspective of race, pirate and treasure hunt. It will illustrate carefully a different relationship between master and slave, and a adventurous tales about treasure hunt which was left by pirates, and an analysis of the process which Poe takes to reach a special effect for us to know Allan Poe better. In this thesis, part one will give a brief introduction to Edgar Allan Poe and his famous detective reasoning tales and The Gold Bug. Part two will introduce Edgar Allan Poe’s attitude towards race and how he conveys his idea in The Gold Bug. The third part is going to illustrate Poe’s usage of effect theory and his literary imagination. The last part will be a conclusion on my thesis.
