Abstract In the study of cognitive linguistics, metonymy is a powerful cognitive instrument. It plays a very important role in human language use and reflects a significant form of human cognition. According to cognitive linguists, language is based on our experience of the world and the way we perceive and conceptualize it. It is believed that thought is embodied, that is, the structures used to put together our conceptual systems grow out of bodily experience and make sense of it. Moreover, the core of our conceptual system is directly grounded in perception, body movement and experience of a social character. Thought is imaginative, and this imaginative capacity allows for abstract thought to take the mind beyond what we can see and feel. Just like the metonymies are often based on bodily experience, the imaginative capacity is also embodied. In order to exemplify this subtle relationship between metonymy and embodied cognition, this paper briefly analyzes the cognitive mechanism of metonymy with respect to embodiment. 66556
