Guan Xianheng (2001) criticizes the marriage in Pride and Prejudice is not as simple as it outwardly should be. Social status, property, perception, personality and so forth all have something to do with 18th-century-country marriage, which make marriage hard to distinguish. However, in the vivid depiction of 18th-century traditional marriage of Jane Austin, the two lovely sisters, Elizabeth and Jane refresh the novel a lot. And their marriages are much different from other traditional ones, due to the true love and personal value in the marriage rather than manifest trade of material and social status.
Dong Na (2013) thinks that in Pride and Prejudice, the view of marriage of Elizabeth is actually Austin’s view, which insists that only taking social status, property, honor or appearance as the condition for marriage is wrong, but the marriage based on love also need to consider others’ economic factors. Hence, both love and property are indispensable.
Yu Dan once said,” A perfect marriage has no pattern, and before getting married, people must get to know themselves. People should choose the most suitable one rather than the best condition.”
1.4 Existing problems
Based on the results of some initial reading and personal reflection, I find that there exist some problems which are kind of force majeure. First of all, the background and time of Pride and Prejudice are so far away from our modern society that it’s hard for researchers to quest for author’s exact purpose and significance of writing. Besides, there are millions of scholars have researched this famous novel which means there are few new different points waiting for others to discover and the scholars have already set up the main directions of research that are so difficult to innovate. Last but not least, as a new researcher, I have not read many works of Jane Austin, which lead to my lack of knowledge for studying her masterpiece deeply and exhaustively. All I am trying to do is write down my personal feelings and understandings which may not correct enough.
