Coherence in the Translation of Marine English

Abstract Nowadays, ship and ocean engineering industry plays an important role in economy and technology for every country。 Translation of this field is therefore given more and more significance since it serves as a bridge of communication for countries and economic identities。 84547

The quality of text is to some extent decided by the meaningful coherence。 Coherence is defined as semantic association in discourse。 Coherence is a pragmatic concept and a relationship formed by illocutionary force of discourse。

 Coherence is vital to translation text as well。 Violation of coherence may lead to misunderstanding of the original meaning。 Translation is in essence the mapping of cohesion-coherence between the source text and the target text。

Marine English can be sub-classified from scientific English which contains many professional terminologies and rigorous syntax。 Chinese and English are different in gravity center, word order, sentence pattern and methods of coherence。

To achieve coherence in translation, we can employ a lot of skills including addition, ellipsis and retranslation of words, conversion of part of speech, adjustment of words order, pision of sentence and conversion of voice。 By using these skills, translation can avoid westernization, which keeps translation coherent。

The realization of meaningful coherence should be considered an essential requirement for a translation of marine English。 And it should be included into the scope of future translation studies。

船海英语翻译的语义连贯

摘 要船舶与海洋工业在各个国家经济与科技中扮演着越来越重要的作用，船舶英语翻译对于学习和交流国内外先进的技术发挥了极其重要的中介作用。

翻译的质量在某种程度上取决于意义连贯。连贯被定义为是篇章的语义关联。连贯是一个由话语的言外之力形成语用学的概念和关系。

连贯对翻译同样重要，违背连贯原则可能导致对原意的曲解。翻译实质上就是源语语篇和译语语篇之间衔接-连贯的映现。

船海英语属于科技英语的一种，拥有很多专业术语和严谨的句法。英汉两种语言在语义重心，语序，句型和连贯方式等方面都有所不同。为了实现翻译连贯，我们可以采用很多方法，包括增加词语，省略词语，重译词语，转换词性，调整语序，分割句子，还有转变语态。采用这些方法，可以避免译文西化，使译文连贯。

在翻译船海英语时，意义连贯意识应该被看作基本的要求，它应该被纳入未来的翻译研究的范围。
