II. Overview of the Encouraging Words
2.1 Definition of Encouraging Words
Encouraging words are the language, gestures of praise, or eye exchange that teachers give to their learners for their good behaviors or to encourage them. American famous psychologist James said: “The most profound principles of human beings are hoped to be appreciated, praise by others” (237). Encouraging is the ability of a person’s personality and recognition. It can inspire a person’s spirit up, tap its potential, and guide them to success. In the teaching process, it can not only enhance learners’ sense of learning, to develop their values, release their mental energy, but also can active classroom atmosphere, promote the relationship between teachers and learners.
Encouragement and praise are a type of art, which need to be dug and to found. As everyone knows, encouragement and praise make people to be a space full of positive and happy feelings, and they can develop the learners’ efficiency of study and stimulus their potential power. However, learners were not God, they have some behaviors or expressions which others do not like even hate. How can the teachers find beauty from those behaviors that they don’t like? That needs teachers’ efforts, everyone must learn to forgive and endure. Only when you do this by heart, can you forgive their behaviors and find their merits. If you have done these, your praise and encouragement are really from the bottom of your heart.
2.2 The Function of Encouraging Words
Encouragement and praise are strong energy. Although they are just some normal and common sentences, they can make great effect to make listeners be happy, confident and full of power. In the daily life, everyone needs to be praised and encouraged. Praise and encouragement like sunshine, people can not live without them. As a saying said “Praise we receive is our salary.” In this sense, praise has a strong fascination. It is the necessary language in everyone’s daily life. Praise and encouragement are very simple, but they are crucial to everybody. Even if a very simple sentence, it is enough to let a student excited for several days. What’s more, it can lead a student who feels himself inferior to others to find his advantages and make him be confident. Furthermore, he will turn more energetic to study. First, encouraging words with incentive is a way to affirm and approve learners by teachers. From a psychological point of view, encouraging words can meet student’s achievements and make learners feel good, which is undoubtedly one of the best push to let them make greater progress in the future. Secondly, encouraging classroom words can give learners further indication that what should they do next. With the thinking ability, skills, methods and observation strategy, the teacher gives timely guidance, which allows learners to clearly understand their strengths and weaknesses, and know what areas they should continue their efforts to overcome the deficiencies. Encouraging words can also give learners confidence and courage, especially for those relatively shy or introverted learners, who, in many cases, easily be forgotten. The learners need more teachers’ sincere concern and encouragement. Teachers should not turn a blind eye to it.
