Abstract In recent years, as one of the main academic subjects, metaphorical-word translation is confronted with knotty problems even with widely-accepted translating methods of domestication and foreignization。 Despite its complexity and capriciousness, strategies of metaphorical-word translation can be found。 By analyzing the definition and features of metaphorical words as well as the difference between Chinese and English metaphorical words, the thesis offers an approach to understanding the common context and phenomena of metaphorical words so as to ease translating problems。 87066

Coupled with typical metaphorical words in economic, political and social fields in The Economist from 2010 to 2015, five translating methods namely, literal translation, free translation, filling-up translation, simile-converted translation and proverb-converted translation can be adopted to realize the faithful translation of key information and cultural elements in the context。

Metaphorical Words and Their Translation in The Economist

Metaphorical Words and Their Translation in The Economist

I。 Introduction A metaphor is a rhetoric device that draws a connection between two unrelated or partly related objects, which especially emphasizes the similarities between these two ideas。 For example, Achilles' heel is a metaphor, which means one’s fatal weakness。 Achilles is an invincible figure from Greek Mythology, but he died from a small wound in the heel。 Therefore, Achilles' heel is connected with fatal weakness, thus constitutes a metaphor pair。论文网

A metaphorical word is a one-word metaphor or a metonym。 Although the definition of metaphorical word is quite easy to understand, its function is basically twofold: its pragmatic function, also the main function, is to describe a person, an object or an action more dramatically and concisely than in literal or physical language。 The second function is aesthetic。 Sometimes, a metaphorical word bears resemblance to euphemism。 For instance, people are reluctant to say the word “death”; they would take the word “paradise” instead。 “So a metaphorical word can be regarded as an ornament to liven up other types of texts, to make them more natural, colorful, dramatic and witty, especially in advertising and journalism” (Peter Newmark, 1981: 84)。
