Critical Discourse Analysis of News Discourse —Based on Catastrophic Journalism from Chinese and Western Media

I。 Introduction

1。1 Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and News Discourse

Critical discourse analysis, as a branch of linguistics, was first born in the book Language and Control written by Fowler and Kress (Bai Yang, 2011)。 Like other approaches to discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis analyses real and often extended instances of social interaction which take a linguistic form, or a partially linguistic form (Tian Hailong; Zhao Peng 2012)。 Critical discourse analysis aims at revealing the ideology and power relations hidden in news (Xin Bin, 2002)。 News discourse is an indispensable means for transmitting information in people’s daily life。 Usually, news discourse is affected by dominant ideology and can directly or indirectly influence people’s minds, which plays an important role in forming people’s attitude and ideology。 The ability of appreciation and criticism can get improved through analyzing public news discourse (Shan Shengjiang, 2011)。 论文网

Retrieving Chinese periodical, we could find that news discourse has always been research objects for critical discourse analysis。 Actually, most of public could not hold a clear understanding towards news discourse and think that news is objective, neutral and fair。 However, news involves social process。 At the same time, CDA on catastrophic journalism is less than the analysis on other types of news discourse。 Therefore, this paper tries to analyze disaster news from the perspective of CDA and reveal the ideology through analyzing the ideological meaning in it。

1。2 Significance of the Study

Previous researches mainly focus on political or economic news reports, and pay little attention to catastrophic journalism which contain hidden ideology。 This study takes Halliday’s systemic functional grammar as the basic theoretical framework。 The samples for this study are news discourse on several catastrophic journalism from China Daily and The Times。 This study aims to reveal the accurate ideology hidden in news and tries to improve the reader’s critical consciousness。 The research mainly has three significances: One significance is that studies concerned with catastrophic journalism is less well established as lots of research about news discourse focuses on political and economic news reports。 The second significance is that this study could help the public raise critical consciousness in news reports, catastrophic reports in particular。 Another significance is to help to provide an effective method in viewing news reports and find the hidden ideology in news discourse。文献综述

II。 Literature Review

2。1 Studies Abroad

T。A van Dijk, N。 Fairclough and some other linguists are the main representatives in studying CDA。 In 1979, the publication of the book Language and Control which was written by Roger Fowler, Gunther Kress and Tony Trew marked the origin of CDA, and many western scholars attempt to adopt Halliday’s systemic functional grammar to study the relationship between language, ideology and power。
