Abstract The Golden Notebook is a classic master work of the English authoress Doris Lessing。 With high literature value, this novel has been widely spread among the world and China makes no exception。 There are many Chinese versions of The Golden Notebook among which Chen Caiyu and Liu Xinmin’s co-translation is a typical and classic one。 This study, based on Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory and taking the original English novel and Chen’s Chinese translation as the data, will take cultural background and translator’s style into consideration, focus on the lexical equivalence, syntactic equivalence and textual feature equivalence, compare similarities and differences of meaning, style, reader responses between the original and the translation with specific examples so as to observe and study the beauty as well as shortcomings of Chen’s version, offering translation reference for similar textual translation。

The Golden Notebook is a classic magnum opus of the English authoress Doris Lessing, who was the winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 2007。 She put the novel under the social background of London at the time from 1950s to 1960s, and used the unique perspective to show us the struggle of the women in that era through thought and life。 Just like Sun Zongbai said, she not only uses a unique artistic perspective to show the major issues of this era of her existence, and devotes herself into a serious exploration on the fate of mankind and the human spirit in the world (Sun,1981)。 She broke through the limitation of the traditional function of form and developed it into one part of things itself。 To prove this feature among many of her novels, the Golden Notebook is a good example。 As a result, The Golden Notebook has always been considered as Lessing’s most famous work。 This master work is so successful with high literature value that we can find some research on this novel from the Internet or library。 The studies are mainly about two aspects。 One is the novel’s structures and themes, the other is to explain the heroine Anna’s subject consciousness, dominant position and deconstruction of the male discourse from the feminism theory。 However, the studies are seldom from the point of translation, especially from the perspective of Nida’s functional equivalence theory。 Among the translation versions, the Chinese rendering translated by Chen Caiyu and Liu Xinmin is the most classic one which enjoys extensive attention and lots of readers are attracted。 Thus, the good combination of the famous translation theory and the classic translation version is likely to provide us with new discoveries and different findings。 论文网
