On translation of Chinese Dish Names in State Banquets from Perspectives of Skopos Theory

Abstract The translation of dish names has draw lots of intentions for that many errors exists puzzled the foreign guests。 And with more and more international events, China has more chance to hold state banquets with foreign guests, where the translation of the dish names has been highlighted and conducted seriously, which can give a good reference to the translation of all Chinese dish names。88316

To break through the traditional translation approach, German functionalists has put forward Skopos theory in 1970s, which provide the theoretical basis for the translation of dish names。 “Let your translation decisions be guided by the function you want to achieve by means of translation。” This concept is now widely used in the translation of dish names。

 Under the guide of Skopos Theory, the feature and function of the dish names has studied and the strategies used in translation of dish names in state banquets has been analyzed。
