Wangli from Anhui University, on his thesis “Study on Biblical Archetypal Images in the rainbow, 2013” researches on the archetypal theory and archetypes of the rainbow, the Garden of Eden, water, and the church。 Then he shows the reason for using archetypes and finally directs to the cultural meaning of archetypal criticism。
These theses all include archetypal criticism and 4-6 biblical archetypes。 Their structures are clear。 So in this paper, the main content also contains archetypal criticism and 4 biblical archetypes。 In Jia Haiyan’s thesis, Lawrence’s religion is discussed based on Lawrence’s life experience and his novels。 In this paper, Lawrence’s religion is discussed on the basis of his life experience and the 4 biblical archetypes he uses in the Rainbow。

3。1 Jung’s Psychology and Archetypal Theory
The main ideas his theory are as follows:
1。 A word may have many shades of meaning which can delimit the subject conceptually。 But by bringing together cultural and everyday conceptions, a picture can be formed of a “factor” or the kernel of meaning that can be intimated but not defined。 (The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious (Book)。 Hobson, R。 F。 Journal of Analytical Psychology。 Jul61, Vol。 6 Issue 2, p161-168。 8p。)
2。 Recurrent themes can be distinguished in inpidual psychological material, and in myths, religious imagery, and occult speculations。
3。 Consciousness arises from a preconscious state by a process involving integration of experience in archetypal patterns, any mental representation can be regarded as an archetypal image。
4。 The collective unconscious is outside space and time and is, therefore, a dimension of the psyche that is transpersonal。(Winnicott on Jung: destruction, creativity and the unrepressed unconscious。 Meredith-Owen, William Journal of Analytical Psychology。 Feb2011, Vol。 56 Issue 1, p56-75。 20p。)
