To achieve desired and efficient results of reading, reading strategies play a crucial role, no matter the reading in L1 or L2。 As Anderson (1991) noted, reading strategies are deliberate, cognitive steps that readers can take to assist in acquiring, storing and retrieving new information。 And they are adopted flexibly and selectively according to the genre, the purpose and the context of reading。 Researchers have long proved that successful reading is strongly associated with proper and frequent use of reading strategies。 Furthermore, effective readers are believed to be more sensitive and aware of using strategies than less effective readers。 Lots of researches and studies indicate that the use of reading strategies in English reading tests can not only help EFL learners improve their reading comprehension abilities effectively but also get twice the result with half the effort in English learning。文献综述
However, during the internship in Hangzhou Jialvyuan Middle School, the first time I supervised all the pupils taking the English examination, I was amazed to find that their reading habits during the exam varied significantly。 Some students always pointed to the words with their fingers during reading and there was little marker except the answers on some students’ test papers while some students read lines quickly and underlined some phrases or sentences from time to time。 With seeing this view, I thought how their reading scores would be。 After checking all the exam papers of two classes, I found the reading scores were perse greatly。 So it is imperative to conduct the study。 From that time, I got interested in the using situation of students’ reading strategies in English reading comprehension tests。
Students’ level in Jialvyuan Middle School is in the middle level of all schools in Hangzhou。 Therefore, this study is of great representative significance and can give enlightenment of English reading strategies teaching to all the other middle schools in Hangzhou。 This thesis aims to explore the gap between the reading strategies tested and actually used by Grade 9 students in English reading comprehension tests in order to call teachers’ attention to those reading strategies that students lack。
