A Study on the Improper Use of Punctuation in Junior Students’ English Writing
Abstract Punctuation is very important in English writing, which leads to a better understanding of the writing。 Junior students start to learn English writing and this is an important stage for them to form good writing habits。 This paper studies the improper use of punctuation in junior students’ English writing and the possible reasons that result in such impropriety which include the negative transfer of mother tongue, school education and the quick pace of people’s life。 The subjects are from Class Nine, Grade Nine in Hangzhou Jialvyuan Middle school。 By observing and collecting the punctuation mistakes in students’ English writings, the author gives a concrete analysis about those mistakes。 At the same time, the students’ responses for the necessity of punctuation are examined in the questionnaire。 At the end of the study, the three possible reasons have been analyzed one by one。 Based on all of these, suggestions for the teachers are given to a better teaching of punctuation in students’ English writing。85118

1。 Introduction
At the junior middle stage of school education, a good, standard English writing comply with some basic principles such as the linguistic principles, rhetorical principles and metaphysical principles。 Specifically, the linguistic principles include the vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, tense and so on。 The rhetorical principles are about the effective use of language for expressing the writer’s viewpoints to his readers, which include the topic awareness, logic and rhetorical devices。 The two principles mentioned above are often emphasized by English teachers。 However, the metaphysical principles which are about the punctuation marks, to some extent, are usually ignored in English writing class。 Xiao Fushou(2007) states that punctuation is a necessary part of a writing, which makes the meaning of a writing clear to readers。 It is regulated by Hangzhou Senior Entrance Examination that five punctuation errors in English writing will lead to one point lost。 So to some degree, punctuation is attached importance。 But it is not enough to get teachers and students pay close attention to punctuation。来自优W尔Y论W文C网WWw.YoueRw.com 加QQ7520,18766
