The novel was adapted into a film by John Hillcoat by the same name in 2009, which is performed by Kodi Smit-McPhee and Viggo Mortensen. The film was also quite popular in many countries. Besides, the film was awarded many prizes due to the plot and the profound theme. The Times ranked The Road first on its list of the 100 best fiction and non-fiction books of the past ten years in 2010. McCarthy, the author, has also been increasingly mentioned as a top candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
As a good novel, the road has caused much attention. Some scholars intends to dig deep into the Eco-ethics ideas in this work. And others pay more attention to the conflicts and reconciliation between the father and the son as well as the surpass of usual relationship between father and son (Chen, 2013, p.153-155). Some also discuss the ethnic connection between them two in post-apocalyptic environment. Still, based on post-modernism ideas, scholars explain the author's idea on ethnics through ethical literary criticism. Cannibalism is regarded as immoral both in the east and west. It is not only a kind of brutal behavior but also against human moral. Through detailed reading, we shall find out that there are many impressive descriptions about cannibalism scenes in this novel. These scenes also help in improving the literary peculiarity of this novel.
In the next chapters, scenes about cannibalism in this novel will be discussed. And this article will go further into the reason why people choose to eat human flesh, since in ancient China, there also exists cannibalism. Furthermore, the dark side of human nature revealed by cannibalism will be taken into consideration to prove the disadvantages of human beings.
