After Tess's misfortune, she could have stayed at Alec's side to get out of poverty, but she doesn’t want that。 Even then Tess feels the pulse of hope in her flesh。 "Is it true that purity is lost forever once the virtue is stained?" she asks herself。 Tess finds Alec deceives her again, Tess kills Alec in shame and anger。 Tess is caught and killed eventually。 Tess fights against the traditional morality courageously and she has to judge herself in such a moral standard。 She feels guilty for her past experiences, especially the death her own child。 She is ashamed of herself and tortures herself。 She leaves her hometown to forget the past and meets Angel there。 She is strongly attracted by him, but the fear and shame in her heart tortures her, she can’t let go of her bitter experience, it is impossible for her to free herself from the heavy shackles。 She still thinks it is her own mistakes even when she is abandoned by Angel。
Tess’s father is too fond of drinking and does no work at all while her mother is ignorant。 Though born in poor, but in the most precious youth of her life, Tess, like her maiden, enjoys happy life so much。 Tess, however, as the eldest daughter, forced by irresponsible parents, gives up her dream gradually。 She takes the initiative to help parents and takes the responsibility of caring for the family。 She is pretty girl who has fragile, delicate feelings and noble minds。 However, Tess has kept swaying between the tendency to be caught in the disaster and the urge of mankind's pleasure, and it is clear that the latter has a stronger influence on her。 For the loved one, she will do what she can do, no matter how difficult, even against her own wishes and sacrifice her comfortable life。 When in trouble, her self-esteem and guilt prevents her from asking for help。 Tess also has some demerits of her character, she is too native and always judges herself by using the moral rules。 What's more, she has long been confined by the social customs and moral standards, and ultimately, the unfair social law kills her。 Based on the previous studies of Tess, it is found that few of the studies are from the perspective of Freud's theory of personality structure, and most of interpretations mainly concentrate on analyzing the causes of Tess's tragedy。 This paper tries to analyze Tess's character through the study of her id, ego and superego。
