    ABSTRACT English is becoming more and more important in our daily life, so students are required to learn English when they are in primary school. In elementary English teaching, learning motivation is an essential factor which affects student’s behavior and learning outcome. If students have a positive attitude towards learning, they will be active in class activities. So, we should first understand the present condition of student’s English learning motivation. This paper will discuss the relevant factors in classroom activities participation, then analyze the motivation that can improve students’ learning efficiency.48242

    1) What are the motivations of the students in elementary English class? 

    2) What are the relevant factors that affect students’ participation in elementary English class?

    The research used questionnaire and classroom observation. The subjects are 47 students in Class4, Grade6 in ChangShu BaoCi Primary School. The purpose of the research is to know more about students’ learning motivation through observing their participation in English class.

    The results show that some students are in passive learning. Open tasks are more welcomed by students. Also, they prefer positive evaluation. Through cooperative learning, such as pair work or group work, students will be more willing to take part in the activity. In the extrinsic motivation, achievement motivation is more important than other extrinsic ones, such as going abroad motivation, information medium motivation and so on. Intrinsic motivation, such as interest motivation, and other integrative motivations are also important in English learning.

    摘要随着英语越来越重要,学生们在小学阶段就要求学习英语。在小学英语课堂教学中,学生的学习动机对他们的课堂行为和学习结果有着很大的影响。如果学生对英语学习抱着积极的态度,他们就会积极参加英语课堂活动。因此,我们首先需要了解学生英语学习动机的现状。本研究将会讨论影响学生课堂参与度的相关因素,再分析出相关动机来提高学生的学习效率。

    2) 影响小学生英语课堂活动参与的因素有哪些?

    本研究将采用问卷和课堂观察的方法,对常熟市报慈小学六(4)班的47位同学进行调查,通过观察更多地了解学生英语学习动机。

    结果表明,一些学生处于被动学习的状态。在课堂任务中,开放型任务更受学生的欢迎。学生们更乐于得到积极的评价。另外,通过一些合作形式的活动,例如同桌活动或小组活动,学生们会更积极的加入进去。在外部动机中,成就动机比出国动机,信息媒介动机等其他外部动机的动机强度更高。另外,学生的内部动机,例如兴趣,综合性动机在英语学习中也是至关重要的。
