Abstract Thomas Hardy, a writer spanning two centuries, plays the role of a connecting bridge and enjoys a unique reputation in British literature. He’s also regarded as one of the most distinguished writers. Tess of the D’Urbervilles, the most representative works of Hardy, was born with controversy, while it reflects the nature of social criticism which has led to the resurgence of British literature of that time. Nobel Prize winner Claude Simon once remarked, “Tess is the jewel of English literature in 19th century, it has reinforced the position of Hardy both in the literature of the UK as well as of the world.”59089
It’s a must for such an excellent work as Tess to be translated in Chinese. Mr. Zhang Guruo brought his translation of Tess to China in 1936 and in 2005, Mr. Sun Zhili modified Zhang’s version and retranslated Tess. Though we are unable to assess the advantages and disadvantages of their versions, they all have great research value.
Translation is the recreation of translator who takes an active role in his translation, so we can’t deny the role of translator. The significance of translation in cultural exchange makes it urgent for us to continue the discussion of translator’s style. Therefore, this paper, based on the translator’s style research method, makes comparative studies on the two versions of Tess.
