The study centers round a detailed analysis of examples and the possible factors influencing translations like reader response, strategies adopted by the translator and the publisher. The present study aims to explore and examine Goldblatt’s consideration in translating the Chinese original of Lang Tuteng as a novel into English and to make better sense of the translation. 1. Introduction
Lang Tuteng, a book published in 2004, has achieved a great success in its sales and influence as well. It consists of a series of wolf stories, conveying an ecological warning and a strong need to reflect on the ecological protection. As a semi-autobiographical novel, it was based on Jiang Rong, the author’s life experience in Inner Mongolian grassland. While there, he experienced a long time dealing with wolves that are considered the soul of grassland. And the author presents us the specific customs and splendor of grassland in Inner Mongolian grassland. Apart from that, it sharply interprets the Chinese national character and Chinese history and culture. But these are not enough to understand its success. What really gets people’s attention is its international sensation. “It has been translated into thirty different languages and published in 110 countries across the world. The English version of Lang Tuteng, entitled Wolf Totem, was translated by Howard Goldblatt. With his successful translation, Wolf Totem has been awarded the first Man Asian Literary Prize. After its publication in 2008, it has created a sales record for Chinese literature in the western market.” ( Zhang Jing, 2013) 源:自*优尔`%论,文'网·www.youerw.com/
