Abstract Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) is a famous Irish writer of aestheticism in the late nineteenth century and his works are featured by vivid images。 Images of death play an essential role in The Picture of Dorian Gray, which is a narrative of destruction and self-destruction of Dorian Gray。 During his journey to decadence, Dorian’s inward monstrosity is reflected on the picture regardless of his sustainment of superficial beauty in reality。 Dorian Gray is a complicated paradox who enjoys praise from society for his beautiful appearance but turns out to be a devil at odds with social regulations。72329
The thesis discusses the connotations and expressional forms of the representative images of death as the research objects in The Picture of Dorian Gray from three aspects。 Namely, they are death images of sight, death images of characters and death images of emotions。 These images present us a process from despair to darkness and finally a glimmer of hope。 On the one hand, Oscar Wilde makes his accusations on the oppressive environment of the Victorian Period。 On the other hand, he also expresses his appeals for kindness and beauty。
Although the darkness and decadence in the Victorian Period of the nineteenth century have been all exposed, the death of Dorian Gray has passed on a glimmer of hope, which is an indication of the disappearance and death of darkness, and the representative of pursuit towards kindness and goodness。
