Title An Intertextual Analysis of the Female Images of Fa Mulan ---in The Woman Warrior and Mulan Ballad
Abstract With the development of the Western women movement, women start to re-examine themselves, to observe the world with their rational sense。 From the perspective of Kristiva’s intertextuality, this paper will discuss the female image of Mulan from Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior and The Mulan Ballad。 This thesis will be seperated into two parts: critical inheritance and creative adaption, which has a review and new interpretation on the images of Mulan。
Firstly, parody is the main point of critical inheritance。 In this part, it will exam the inheritance in the names and plot of going to the front of the Ms。 General on horse from The Woman Warrior to The Mulan Ballad; besides, the inheritance of the prick on Mulan’s back is the parody of the Ode of Yue Fei, which makes an allusion to Mulan’s strength and brave。 Secondly, creative adaption has a great emphasis on the unremitting pursuit and struggle of Mulan in new female values, voicing the silence, establishing dignity, which reveals a new woman image with self-respect, independence。
