By searching the internet and library, I’ve collected many opinions on the reasons of Schindler's changes from some critics。
In “Schindler’s Ark: a study in heroism, therapy and change”, Graham Tuson illustrates some connections between different models through study of Oskar Schindler, considering Schindler is an ideal heroic type in the new times and indicates connections between his acts and those of some modem therapists(Tuson,1985)。 In Oskar Schindler’s moral development during the Holocaust, Luitgard N。 Wiindheiler discusses the development of Oskar Schindler’s spiritual level。 He infers that it’s Schindler's creative strength that enables him to turn his shortcomings into goodness and compassion into the service of his highest goal: to rescue as many persecuted human beings as he could(Wiindheiler,1986)。 While in A Noah of Our Days: Around Him Mythologies Arose, the author Elisa Morera de la Vail assimilates Schindler to the Noah, because he sheltered his Jewish workers his factory, just like what Noah has done (Morera, 2009)。
In Schindler’s Free Choice in the Absurd World —— An Existentialist Interpretation of Schindler’s List (汤晓军, 2013) ,Tang Xiao-jun mentioned Sartre’s theory of existentialism, pointed out the distinct existential features in Schindler’s List, and offered a new interpretation of the novel in two parts —— the absurd situation in which Schindler exists and his free choice for himself。 Zhang Xin-li put his attention on the recovery of human nature and moral awakening in the film。 (章新利, 2012) Fan Bing-jie attributes the reason to the heroism in people's inner heart。 (范冰杰, 2011)
From the conclusion above, it can be inferred that the critical study of Schindler’s List, is quite far from enough。 Question concerning the protagonist Oskar Schindler's motive towards the rescue of Jews like "How can he be such an unlikely hero?" is often discussed by critics。 As the title this dissertation aims to approach the film of Schindler’s List through the changing of Schindler。 As a man, undoubtedly he has shortcomings。 Being influenced by the surroundings and his kind in the inner world, he makes the human nature liberated and rescues the Jews though faced with lots of difficulties and even the risk of being arrested or killed。
2。 The Changing of Schindler
In the movie "Schindler’s List", there is a great change of Oskar Schindler's values and pursuits taking place from the beginning to the end, but the film did not point out intuitively what specific events that moved Schindler and made him devoted himself to save the Jews if it costs him his hast penny。 At the same time, precisely because of this, the film was able to afford the audience much food for thought, and impel them to think deeply about humanity and have a more profound understanding of it as well。 I will analyze the Schindler’s journey inward through the effects of the surroundings。
