A Study on the Human-Ocean Relationship in Moby Dick from the Perspective of Ecologism Abstract Herman Melville was one of the greatest writers in American literature in the 19th century, and was also acclaimed as the American Shakespeare。 Moby Dick, published in 1851, is his magnum opus。 It is a novel of marine theme, reflecting the unbalanced relationship between humans and the ocean。 Building on the previous critics’ researches, this thesis has discussed the human-ocean relationship in the story from the perspective of ecologism。78328
This thesis analyzes the human-ocean relationship at two levels。 Firstly, it analyzes the conflicting relationship between humans and the ocean, including humans’ plunder to the ocean, the punishment of nature on humans and the departure of ecologism from Ahab。 Then, it also probes into the harmonious human-ocean relationship, which includes nature’s gift to humans and reflection of ecological thoughts from Ishmael’s attitude toward the ocean。
By exploring the two relationships, it is hoped that readers can further comprehend the crucial value of the novel。 Meanwhile, they can also understand the importance of marine protection, and define the obligation to nature。
