Abstract  Inpidualism is a kind of belief and a sort of moral, political and social philosophy。 Inpidualism believes that personal interests should be the most important factor in determining human behaviors, and it emphasizes the importance of personal freedom and inpidual rights, as well as “inpidual independence” and “the virtue of self-independence”。 Inpidualism is the core of American values and an obvious characteristic of American society。 Nowadays, there are many films and television programs which can reflect the American inpidualism values。 So this paper takes two inspirational movies whose social evaluations are very high as the research objects, and they are The Shawshank Redemption and The Pursuit of Happiness。 Meanwhile, by means of analyzing these two films’ texts, readers can analyze the American people’s inpidualism。 This can lead readers to understand the meanings of American inpidualism with a deeply understanding and the impacts of inpidualism on Americans。 It has a greatly useful significance for us to study the American social culture。

    Film, as an art form, is a synthesizing of science and technology。 A variety of artistic elements such as literature, music and art are aesthetically appreciated by the public。 Film reflects people’s real life, thoughts and feelings。 Movies can intensively show the main features of some kinds of culture types。 The mainstream values spreading by American films are the generally identified values by the American mainstream society which are spiritual and cultural traditions and core values。 And the spiritual and cultural traditions share a same meaning with the core cultural values in inpidualism。 Inpidualism is the essence of the Unite states’ traditional culture and the principal part of American spirits。 In the period of rapid development and cultural fusion, through the films, the understanding of inpidualism in American society is more deeply and knows of the showings in every aspects of inpidualism is more abundant。
