With the rapid development of globalization, communication, no matter in economy, politics or culture, between countries is becoming more and more frequent。 Movie as a new kind of medium plays an important role in culture communication, which is conducive to the dissemination of culture。 And after the World Wide Web was invented, ordinary people are accessible to foreign movies。 

Since movie title is the bond between movie and audience, translation of English movie titles becomes the first and most important work。 From one hand, English movie title translation shows different cultures, and attracts audiences to watch the movie and learn western culture。 From another hand, the quality of translation of English movie titles directly influences the box office。

This paper tries to compare the similarities and differences between English and Chinese movie titles, and analyze strategies used in English movie title translation。 With this brief study, the thesis hopes to make a little contribution to the translation of English movie title in China。

2。 Literature Review

2。1 Characteristic of English movie title translation

Informative factor is the most important characteristic in English movie title translation。 The translation of English movie title should be concise and reveal its basic information。 Usually audiences could know what type the movie is according to the translated title。 For example: the movie Se7en is translated into “七宗罪”, from which we could know that it’s a detective movie; Saw is translated into “电锯惊魂”, from which we know that it’s a horror film; And Flipped is translated into “怦然心动”, from which we know that it’s a romantic film。 This is informative factor。 What’s more, audiences could get a general idea about the movie。
