Black humor is a kind of literary style rose in America which O。 Henry’s used it to express the satire to society and show the sympathy to the lower class in his novels。 The most typical works contain black humor are The Cop and the Anthem and The Gift of the Magi。 By using black humor, he created his unique endings。 

The Gift of the Magi is a very beautiful story between Della and her husband Jim。 Della wants to buy Jim a present, so as Jim are poor。 Therefore, Della sells her long hair which can depreciate the Queen’s jewels and gifts to buy a platinum fob chain to match Jim's watch, while Jim sells his gold watch which can let the janitor of King Solomon envy enough to buy the combs。 Apparently they do not get what they want。 People are always praising their love but few of them can pay attention to this unique ending。 The writer not only wants to show what the true love is but also he wants to let us know how difficult the life is for poor people。 The only thing they want is a "fine and rare and sterling" present on Christmas day。 They sacrificed the most valuable things they owned but they would never get it。 This is the fate of the lower class。
