Picture books refer to the books with a large number of coherent pictures and relatively few texts to pass the information or illustrate the story (Perry Nodelman, 1998)。 The illustrations in picture books are as important as words, or even more important than them in telling the story especially for lower grade students。 They provide the visual aids for students to have a better understanding of the story。 The recent studies reveal that picture books have a positive effect on students’ language learning。 English picture books conform to the three language learning conditions proposed by primary school scholar Krashen (1981): the language input for students is comprehensible, the situation created is real and natural and the usage of them is beneficial for improving the reading efficiency。 Therefore, it will be significant to explore the effects of English picture books on reading efficiency among grade three primary school pupils。
