This thesis is an analysis about music of The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins。 It aims at studying the aspects that are related to music in The Hunger Games trilogy to analyze the significance and functions of the music in these aspects such as background, characters, themes and the structure of the trilogy。
1。1。 Suzanne Collins and The Hunger Games Trilogy
Suzanne Collins is an American television screen writer, best known as the author of The New York Times best selling series The Hunger Games trilogy, including The Hunger Games(2008), Catching Fire (2009), and Mockingjay (2010)。 Collins was born on August 10, 1962, in Hartford, Connecticut, joining a military family as the youngest of four children。 She graduated from the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham in 1980, majoring in theater arts and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University in 1985 with a double major in theater and telecommunications。 In 1989, Collins earned her M。F。A。 in dramatic writing from the New York University Tisch School of the Arts。

The Hunger Games trilogy takes place in Panem, the remains of a post-apocalyptic North America where a highly civilized central city named the Capitol reigns supreme over its 12 outlying, impoverished districts (originally 13)。 As a punishment and reminder for a prior districts’ rebellion, two tributes from each district-a boy and a girl between the ages of 12 and 18-are selected via lottery to fight to death in a high-tech arena in the annual nationally televised Hunger Games。 Only one tribute can finally survive to be the only victor。 The story follows the narration of the heroine Katniss Everdeen, a 16- year-old girl from District 12 who volunteers to take her younger sister Primrose Everdeen in the 74th Hunger Games。 She finally wins the Game and leads a rebellion to overthrow the Capitol governance。
The Hunger Games trilogy is heavily influenced by the Greek mythology of Theseus and the Minotaur。 As Suzanne Collins once admitted in an interview (Rick Margolis, 2008, A Killer Story: An Interview with Suzanne Collins, Author of ’The Hunger Games’), “It’s very much based on the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, which I read when I was eight years old。 I was a huge fan of Greek and Roman mythology。 As punishment for displeasing Crete, Athens periodically had to send seven youths and seven maidens to Crete, where they were thrown into the labyrinth and devoured by the Minotaur, which is a monster that’s half man and half bull。 Even when I was a little kid, the story took my breath away, because it was so cruel, and Crete was so ruthless。”
