Idioms are set phrases or short sentences, which have the special meaning and are widely known。 Idioms are both the essence of language and significant portion of vocabularies。 English and Chinese are highly developed language and there are a lot of idioms that are related to dog。 Most of them can express accurate, vivid meaning。 Idioms fully display the charm of language, and also reflect the culture behind the language。

Language is a cultural carrier。 Culture-loaded vocabulary plays an important role in a language。文献综述

However, different social backgrounds and national culture have a profound effect on the connotation of culture。 Due to the differences in eastern and western cultural background, there was a big difference in understanding idioms about dog in Chinese and English, which result in the misunderstanding in language transformation and the cultural obstacles appeared in the process of cultural feeling。 Chinese  and western people have different additional cultural meaning to animals。 In Chinese, people often use "dog" word to reproach him whom they hate, or someone that is narrow-minded。 But in the west, foreigners have big differences with Chinese in the figurative image on the dog。 For example, In China if someone (Chinese) hear "You are a lucky dog" they will be angry, because they will think you are so rude to curse someone。 But in English, "lucky dog" means "you are so lucky"。 So there is inevitable misunderstanding between Chinese and foreigners。 The gap of culture between Chinese and westerners, is the leading cause of linguistic persity。 Today, China is developing rapidly, and more and more foreigners come to China。 We  can  see western products everywhere and the western culture and concept have begun to spread into China。 We have more and more close communication with them。 So it is necessary for us to have enough knowledge to know how the dog displays in another culture and how to use the idioms with dog properly which makes us pay different attention and take communication skills in order to make a big success。 What we should do is to point out the differences between language and culture of Chinese and English from “dog” idioms and their application, which aims to help people grasp deep cultural connotations and it will contribute to reach a successful cross-cultural communication。 汉英语言中狗习语文化对比分析(3):http://www.youerw.com/yingyu/lunwen_178188.html
