Consumption, as a term, has gained its popularity since the advent of commodity market。 For the majority of people, they purchase and consume a certain amount of goods for the sake of survival or good quality life。 While consumerism is a different term, which is coined to describe a situation where materials consumption is pursued endlessly and thus is far beyond users’ real needs。 For instance, they spend money on luxury goods, a sign of wealth or they, behaving like shopaholics, are keen on the pleasure generated by shopping。 The prevalence of consumerism contribute to the fact that America though is not the initiator, it has developed into a phase in 20th century when the idea that money is almighty has been wildly held by almost everyone and when commodity culture formed (王晓德 2007)。 According to Featherstone’s logic in The Body in Consumer Culture, it is at that time that commodity culture is on the way of formation and rapid development。 And the emergence of commodity culture is on the premises that the expansion of capitalist production, which causes an accumulation of items and stores。 Therefore, the ordinary who live in the society then are misled to indulge themselves in consumerist practices, be it material or symbolic, which causes lethal damage to their mental health。
