Abstract Euphemism is a cultural phenomenon as well as a  linguistic concept。 Every language has its own euphemisms, so do English and Chinese。 They are deeply rooted in social life and have a great influence on social communication。 As an indispensable and natural part of language, English and Chinese euphemisms have drawn much attention from scholars at home and abroad。 English and Chinese euphemisms have played a great role in people’s communication since they came into existence。 The communication without euphemisms is unimaginable。 Euphemisms are used like emollient, which makes the communication go on smoothly。

This thesis is intended to make a contrastive analysis of euphemisms in English and Chinese and explore the relevant translation strategies, which surely contributes not only to a better understanding of the linguistic features of euphemism in both cultures, but also to appropriate application of euphemisms in communication。85677

摘要  委婉语是一种文化现象，也是一种语言概念。每种语言都有它自己的委婉语，英语和汉 语也是。英汉委婉语起源于社会生活中，并且对社会交流有巨大影响。作为语言不可或 缺的两部分，英汉委婉语已经引起了国内外学者的诸多关注。自从英汉委婉语问世以来， 他们在人们的交流中已经发挥了巨大的作用。没有委婉语的交流是无法想象的，委婉语 就像润滑剂一样，可以使得交流进展的更顺畅。 本文对英汉两种语言中存在的委婉语进行对比分析与翻译，这不仅有助于我们对英汉委 婉语所反映出来语言特征中的不同文化有一个更好的了解，而且有助于在交际中恰当地 使用委婉语。
