书籍传承着智慧与文明，记载着人类历史的发展与进步。千百年来，人们创造了许多优秀的书籍形态，在古代，最早的“书”是便于记载事件，将文字刻在动物的骨头上传递信息的。随着社会的进步与发展，先后出现了简策、金刻、石刻、缣帛等书籍形式。后来由于纸和印刷术的发明，书籍的形态也随之发生了很多变化，纸成为记载事物的主要载体，书籍出现了卷轴装、旋风装、蝴蝶装等各式各样的形式，根据制作材料和方法的不同，创造出今天千姿百态的书籍形态。书籍的形态设计是书籍装帧设计的一部分。
