Abstract As an indispensable social means in daily life, euphemism is often found in Chinese literature, Hong Lou Meng included。 Therefore, it is of huge necessity to translate the euphemisms without any loss of their implicit and explicit meanings with Chinese characteristics。 

As the result of feudal society, the characters in Hong Lou Meng always obey the principle of “Li” undoubtedly。 So on one hand, it decides that the language they used should be indirect on such topics as death, sex and excretion。 On the other hand, the language should be appropriate and polite on address terms。 So this thesis will talk about euphemism translations of taboos, self-abasing terms and honorifics。 87093

The study of euphemism in translation has been carried out from different perspectives, involving semantics, rhetoric, pragmatics and so on。 And Functionalist Translation Theory holds that translation is a purposeful action and its core theory is the Skopostheory which includes the Skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule。

 According to the analysis of euphemism translation of Hong Lou Meng by the Yangs, it is justified to draw a conclusion that the author’s translation Skopos should be taken into consideration because Skopos is one of the dominant factors in translation and it determines the translators whether emphasize on the coherence rule or the fidelity rule。 Therefore, the Skopostheory provides a different perspective for the analysis of translation study of other linguistic phenomena。

目的论视角下《红楼梦》杨宪益译本中委婉语的翻译研究

摘 要委婉语在日常生活中是一种不可或缺的交际手段，在文学作品中委婉语也屡屡出现。在翻译过程中，是否能将文学作品中的委婉语原汁原味地表达出来是至关重要的。

关于委婉语翻译的理论的研究已经从语义学、修辞学、语用学等多个方面展开过，而功能派认为翻译是一种目的性的行为。功能派的核心理论是目的论，其包括了目的原则、连贯性原则和忠实性原则。

作为封建社会的产物，《红楼梦》中的人物往往都遵循“礼数”。因而《红楼梦》中的关于死亡、性、排泄的语言都应委婉表达出来，同时，关于人的称谓也应恰当合理地表述。因此，本文将运用目的论分析禁忌语和敬谦语两个方面的委婉语。

本文通过对杨宪益夫妇《红楼梦》译本的研究，得出结论，在研究翻译文本时应该考虑译者的翻译目的，因为目的因素决定了整个翻译过程,它决定了译者在翻译过程中是以忠实性为主还是以连贯性为主。因此，目的论为其他语言现象的翻译研究提供了不同视角。
