Violation of Cooperative Principle in Mother-daughter Conversation in Joy Luck Club
Abstract The Cooperative Principle proposed by Paul Grice, a famous American linguist, is the classic theory of applied linguistics。 The Cooperative Principle has been well developed in many aspects, such as educational field, law field, commercial field and so on。 However, there have been few studies on the conversations in literature work。87098
The book Joy Luck Club tells a story of four pairs of mother and daughter immigrating to America。 It depicts their conflicts through the mother-daughter dialogues。 This thesis attempts to employ a new way to study the violations of the Cooperative Principle in mother-daughter dialogues from the four aspects: the quantity maxim: the quality maxim; the relation maxim; the manner maxim。 This thesis aims to analyze the conversational implicatures based upon the Cooperative Principle, and to interpret the underlying cause of the conflicts, in which cultural difference, values and the thinking modes are involved。

《喜福会》中母女交谈对合作原则的违反
摘 要美国语言学家格莱斯(Grice) 提出的合作原则是应用语言学的经典理论。在法律、教育、商业等语言运用领域得到了长足的发展。文学文本中的人物对话也是语言运用的重要领域之一。截至目前,合作原则视角下分析文学对话的研究比较少。
美籍华裔女作家谭恩美的经典小说《喜福会》描绘了四对母女在美的生活经历。关于《喜福会》的研究与评论不胜枚举。而本文尝试用新的一种方法进行研究,即从格莱斯的合作原则的角度聚焦《喜福会》中母女对话对合作原则的四个方面的违反:数量的违反,质量的违反,关系的违反以及方式的违反。根据这些违反合作原则的语言现象分析出小说中人物的会话含义,再进一步挖掘出人物冲突背后的深层原因。其中既有文化冲突,也有价值观念和思维模式的原因。
