Violation of Cooperative Principle in Mother-daughter Conversation in Joy Luck Club
I。 Introduction
Pragmatics, which is a relatively new branch of linguistics, has already obtained great attention from linguists at home and abroad。 A lot of scholars have made great efforts to analyze and conduct research on pragmatic phenomena。 Among those famous researchers, Grice puts forward Cooperative Principle, which plays an important role in pragmatics。 According to the Principle, people try to make the conversation in the direction as they expected during the conversational exchange。 Besides, Grice, in Logic and Conversation, puts forward the conversational implicatures。 In this book, Grice proposes the Cooperative Principle and four conversational maxims: the quantity maxims; the quality maxims; the relation maxims; the manner maxims。 Based upon the four maxims, the conversational implicatures can be analyzed through its violations of the four maxims。论文网
Amy Tan is a Chinese American writer whose Joy Luck Club mainly focus on the relationship between the mother and the daughter based upon her own personal life experiences。 In 1993, her first book Joy Luck Club was such a wonderful hit that it was well received, and it has been translated into 35 languages and won a great number of awards。 Moreover, this novel has been made into a film, which is widely appreciated by the worldwide audiences。 It mainly depicts four pairs of mother and daughter from different cultural backgrounds。 With the advancement of economy and technology in 20th century, an unprecedented worldwide immigration population flooded to America。 The Joy Luck Club mainly tells the conflicts between Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-raised daughters and their struggles in understanding each other。 Because of the different growing-up backgrounds and generation gaps, the daughters and mothers have different values and attitudes towards the life。 The mothers may prefer the filial obedience and implicit expression of love。 Obviously, the mother grew up in China, where there are a lot of rules to obey。 However, the daughters were raised in an American way。 In China, parents, especially the fathers, are the symbol of power。 While in the USA, everyone is equal and people pursue independence。 Therefore, the conflicts are obvious。 These sharp conflicts, particularly reveal in mother-daughter dialogues。 文献综述

Grice put forward the Cooperative Principle in 1967。 Many scholars may adopt such theory in many fields。 Firstly, the scholars in educational field try to employ theory to analyze the conversations among students in class。 Many scholars like Edwards, Mercer and Friel have made great achievements in educational field。 Common knowledge written by Edwards, who is in collaboration with Mercer mentioned the application in educational field。 The book illustrates that Grice’s four conversational maxims try to explain the rules that people how to achieve the same goal。 Secondly, in commercial letters, with the development of the economy and technology, the trend of global economy can not be resisted。 That means, more commercial communications are necessary in such environment of rapid economic growth。 Thirdly, in the intercultural communication, Goody has made studies in this field in the book Toward a Theory of Question。 He conceded that questions can both change the contents and reveal the complicated relationship。 In the temporary world, different people may hold different questions。 And also people from different class may have different understandings of the questions。 Finally, in gender difference, Rundquist in his essay concludes that the women incline to express their ideas without violating the four conversational maxims of the Cooperative Principle frequently。 (Rundquist, 1992: 32)来.自^优+尔-论,文:网www.youerw.com +QQ752018766-
