Abstract Readers’ comprehension of textual meaning is largely based on lexicon。 According to the previous research done by some linguists in this field, lexical repetition, one of the most important cohesive devices in English, provides an effective way for readers to better understand a text。 This thesis mainly studies the functions of lexical repetition in D。H。 Lawrence’s short story The Rocking-Horse Winner。 Based on relative research and analysis, it turns out that lexical repetition of different frequency has different effects on the text。 All together lexical repetition helps to present the theme, model specific figures, reveal the writer’s potential attitude and confirm the lexical meanings。 The research results can offer insight to text reading comprehension。88231
