Charlotte Bronte is a female writer who lived in the Victorian period。 Though she wrote five novels in her short life, Jane Eyre might be the most widely acclaimed one since its publication。 And in this opening chapter, Jane Eyre and Charlotte are introduced。 And literature review about this work is also introduced in this chapter。

1。1。1 On Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre is a novel written by Charlotte Bronte who is one of the most remarkable women novelists in the 19th century。 The publication of Jane Eyre is under a special background which is in Victorian period。 In this period of tense conflicts between the workers and capitalists appeared a new literary trend-critical realism which is full of the exposure and criticism of many aspects of the society。 And Charlotte Bronte also adopts the method of critical realism。 So Jane Eyre is more than a story but also involves the social and historical contexts。

Though it is not as critical as the works of Dickens or Thackeray, Jane Eyre enjoys an important position in the literature of Victorian Period。 It is not only for its writer, Charlotte Bronte, who is one of the greatest female writers in the 19th century but also for its impressive characters and plots。 Jane Eyre is regarded as the best literary production of Charlotte Bronte。 Besides, it is used to be considered as a classical romance for the impressive love story of the heroine Jane Eyre and Mr。 Rochester。 In fact, the original title of Jane Eyre is Jane Eyre: an autobiography。 So when writing this work, Charlotte drew a great deal from her own life experience。 And written in a biographical way, Jane Eyre is not simply a romantic love story but with the color of realism。 From the story of Jane Eyre, the writer also presents us the panorama of the female life in the Victorian period。 Through the narration of Jane Eyre, it also reveals many aspects of Victorian period which involves education, the situation of poor people and female’s position and so on。 For instance, the experience of Jane Eyre in Lowood charity school reveals the crucial situation of education in the Victorian period。
